Over the years, we’ve learned that every child’s reaction to dental visits is as unique as they are. Dr. Jared Poplin and our team dedicate themselves to doing everything possible to keep your child relaxed, but it’s not unusual for a child to need a little extra help to stay calm. Some children often benefit from some form of sedation to keep them comfortable and safe.
As a parent, you probably have concerns and hesitations about sedating your child. We understand your concern, but you can be confident that Dr. Poplin and our team have many years of experience providing kids with safe and effective sedation.
Nitrous oxide is as effective and safe for a young child as it is for adults. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes it as a safe and effective technique for minimizing children’s anxiety. With nitrous oxide (laughing gas or happy air) your child will not get “knocked out” or go to sleep. The effects of the colorless, odorless gas just calm them enough so that we can make the most out of their time in the dental chair while minimizing their stress.
An important benefit of sedation with nitrous oxide is that it works quickly and wears off a couple minutes after treatment with no after effects. Our professional team is trained to handle the needs of fearful children and will stay at your child’s side at all times to support them and monitor their progress. Since nausea can be a side effect of nitrous oxide, we recommend that your child not have a heavy meal prior to their appointment.
In some cases, a child with special needs or one who needs extensive dental work can benefit from in-hospital treatment with general anesthesia. While this may sound a bit intimidating, it is actually a wonderful way for your child to have several treatments done at one time with absolutely no memory of the procedures.
