When Is a Laser Frenectomy Needed?

At Poplin Pediatric Dentistry, we’re committed to providing advanced, compassionate care tailored to your child’s needs. One of the innovative treatments we offer is the laser frenectomy, a minimally invasive procedure used to address tongue ties (ankyloglossia) and lip ties. Using the state-of-the-art Solea® laser, we ensure a gentle, precise approach that promotes faster healing and a more comfortable experience for your child.

What Is a Frenectomy?

A frenectomy is a procedure that removes a frenum - a small fold of tissue that restricts movement. In infants and children, a tight or restrictive frenum under the tongue or upper lip can interfere with breastfeeding, speech development, oral hygiene, and even orthodontic health. When left untreated, these issues may contribute to feeding challenges, delayed speech, or increased risk of cavities.

Signs Your Child Might Need a Frenectomy

Parents often wonder when a frenectomy is necessary. Some common signs include:

  • Breastfeeding difficulties in infants, such as poor latch, clicking sounds, or prolonged feeding

  • Speech delays or difficulty articulating certain sounds

  • Mouth breathing or trouble closing the mouth completely

  • Persistent gaps between the front teeth

  • Difficulty with oral hygiene due to restricted lip or tongue movement

  • Discomfort when eating or swallowing

Why We Use the Solea Laser

We perform frenectomies using the Solea laser, a cutting-edge CO₂ laser that provides a quick and precise treatment experience. This advanced technology sets a new standard in comfort and effectiveness, especially when compared to traditional surgical methods.

One of the key benefits of the Solea laser is its ability to minimize bleeding.  This means that the surgical site is visible and a complete release can be confidently performed.  Additionally, the Solea laser significantly shortens recovery time, allowing your child to return to normal activities quickly and with minimal disruption.

Because the laser sterilizes as it works, it also lowers the risk of infection. This combination of precision, comfort, and safety allows us to treat even our youngest patients with exceptional care and minimal stress.

The Frenectomy Process

For infants, the procedure itself is simple and typically completed in a single visit. After a thorough evaluation, if a frenectomy is recommended, we’ll explain the entire process and answer any questions you may have. Using the Solea laser, we’ll gently release the tie in a matter of seconds. Most infants experience immediate improvement in mobility and function, with minimal immediate post-op discomfort.  After treatment, it is very important to work with your lactation consultant or a speech-feeding therapist to maximize tongue function.

For children over four years old, the process is a little different, something that is called a Functional Frenuloplasty.  Prior to performing this functional frenuloplasty, we require myofunctional therapy prior to treatment.  Think of this as physical therapy for the tongue.  This therapy before and after treatment is imperative to get the best results.

Let Us Help Your Child Smile, Speak, and Thrive with Confidence

A laser frenectomy can make a significant difference in your child’s oral and overall health - especially when performed early and with advanced technology like the Solea laser. If you suspect your child has a tongue or lip tie, early intervention can improve feeding, speech, and development while preventing future complications.
